This meeting presumably took place during filming of the opening sequences for Solaris in Japan. They also met when Kurosawa was shooting Dersu in Russia. He was then led into the movie studio where Tarkovsky was working on Solaris. There, they drank, talked movies, and sang Seven Samurai together. Or, so the story goes! See this piece by Kurosawa.
